Learning to Lead the Congregation in Prayer
Steve Osher, our Director for the Religious School, believes that "Jewish knowledge encompasses many things including B'nai Mitzvah training, history of the Jewish people, Torah Studies, Shabbat and Holiday Prayers. Your child will learn these things at Temple Sinai. But most of all we want your children to enjoy coming to religious school and to instill a love for Judaism and a desire to remain connected with other Jewish people and institutions."

We know how hard it is for parents and kids to juggle schoolwork and after-school activities along with religious school. We have therefore designed a "Sunday only" religious school curriculum which sacrifices none of the essential knowledge and experience of multi-day religious school programs.

Our Rabbi and Cantor take an active role in the religious education of our Temple children. Whether they are teaching music in the classroom, sharing Torah stories or leading discussions on ethical questions from a Jewish perspective, your children will grow up enjoying a close and joyful relationship with our Temple clergy.

B'nai Mitzvot                          Click here for our B'nai Mitzvah Handbook

We offer B'nai Mitzvah (Bar and Bat Mitzvah) classes for folks of every age.  All ages are encouraged to embark on the journey of the Torah.

Bat Mitzvah pride and joy.One of the goals is for our students is to become B'nai Mitzvot, Children of the Commandments. The B'nai Mitzvah is about being called up to the Torah and thus up to G-d.  We help our children obtain the skills & tools to navigate around the challenges and potential shoals along the way of their lifelong journey.

Our goal is not just to teach the one time task of leading the congregation in prayer. It is to provide them with love of their heritage and to become Menschlik [of excellent character].  Some of the many things they will learn along the way: Public Speaking and most importantly Tzadakeh [charity].

Learning to Lead the Congregation in Prayer At Temple Sinai, we look at each and every child preparing for Bar or Bat Mitzvah as a unique individual. Both the program of study and the religious ceremony itself are tailored by our Rabbi and Cantor to bring out each child's unique gifts and to highlight them. As a matter of policy, each child who becomes a B'nai Mitzvah at Temple Sinai is the sole honoree on that important occasion. We view this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your child and family to honor this important milestone in the life of your child or grandchild.

Confirmation

After Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Temple Sinai offers teens a choice of ways to continue their Jewish learning.  We have a Confirmation program for directed study, and B'not Mitzvah teens are also welcomed as teachers' aides and role models for younger children in our Religious School.

Conversion Class: "Jews by Choice"

In recent years, 13 people have become Jews by Choice in our Temple.

This class is under the program called Jewish Outreach, which is sponsored by the Union of Reform Judaism.  While we currently have no classes scheduled, when demand warrants we will offer it again.

The program runs for 40 hours, 2 hours a night per week.  Students are introduced to our history, life cycle, holidays, customs and ceremonies, and become familiar with our House of Worship. We'll attend services, write book reports, and learn very basic Hebrew.  We'll engage in good discussions, have a quiz each week, a final exam, and go before the Bet Din, which validates the final step for the religious ceremony. This ceremony is part of a Friday night service.
