Learning to Lead the Congregation in Prayer
Rivka Felsher,
As the incoming Director of the Temple Sinai Religious School, a one-day-per-week program for students ages 3 through confirmation year, and beyond, Rivka has big plans for the School. Temple Sinai Religious School utilizes the URJ's Chai curriculum for Judaics instruction for students in gan yeladim (kindergarten) through seventh grade.
For more information on the Chai curriculum visit: http://chai.urj.org/

Watch out for face lifts, class room reorganization, further Chai and Mitkadem curriculum implementation, the return of monthly family services, parent committee, youth group, and confirmation class, a monthly infant/toddler Shabbat celebration, parent classes in family ritual and prayer basics, more art, more music, more community partnerships, and more fun! Religious School: ext. 19

Our school also employs the Mitkadem curriculum for Hebrew instruction for students in gan yeladim through confirmation. For more information on the Mitkadem curriculum visit: http://urj.org/learning/teacheducate/hebrew/mitkadem/

Our pre-K students benefit from a custom designed curriculum for their age group that leads into both the Chai and Mitkadem curricula.

Youth Bar & Bat Mitzvah Program

Our program strives to develop in our students a solid Jewish identity, the desire to pursue life long learning, and perform acts of loving kindness as they work toward tikkun olam (repairing the world). As our students are called up to the Torah they also develop public speaking and leadership skills.

At Temple Sinai we look at each and every student preparing for Bar or Bat Mitzvah as a unique individual. Both the program of study and the religious ceremony itself are tailored by our Rabbi and Cantorial Soloist to highlight each student's unique gifts. As a matter of policy, each student who becomes a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Temple Sinai is the sole honoree on that important occasion. We view this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your son or daughter, and your entire family, to honor this important milestone in the Jewish lifecycle.

We offer B'nei Mitzvah (Bar and Bat Mitzvah) classes for young women and young men at the age of 13 (typically grade 7). Students begin their preparations with t'filah (prayer) studies and chanting the blessings in grade 5. Students in grades 5-7 also attend Religious School on 8 pre-scheduled alternate Saturdays per school year, to study t'filah and attend Shabbat morning services.
Individualized tutoring begins 6 months prior to a scheduled bar or bat mitzvah date. More time is given to students with special needs. Students work toward fluent Hebrew reading of their Torah and Haftarah portions and all blessings and service prayers. They perform a pre-determined number of community service hours toward the completion of a mitzvah project of their choosing. Students also write their own capstone speech helping them synthesize the lessons of the Torah and Haftarah, their mitzvah project, and their years in Religious School.

Youth Confirmation Program

Confirmation is another milestone in the Jewish lifecycle for 10th grade students at Temple Sinai. The three year program begins in 8th grade and goes beyond the bar or bat mitzvah which marks the beginning of students' life long learning, to delve deeper into values, issues, goals, and choices in contemporary life as seen through the lens of Reform Judaism. It culminates in a shared Confirmation service held on Shavuot each spring led by the "graduating"
10th grade students in the Confirmation class.

Students at this level engage in chevruta (partner) study, self-directed learning guided by the instructor, classroom research, and creative reporting.
The class is joined by guest instructors from within the congregation and from the larger community.

Students in grades 8-10 are eligible to join our Confirmation Program regardless of their level of prior Jewish religious instruction. The program consists of a three-year rotating curriculum that focuses on the following strands:
Israel & Jews in the Diaspora, Contemporary Issues & Choices, Godwrestling & Spirituality. A fourth strand, Tikkun Olam, will be weaved throughout the three year curriculum with required mitzvah hours in the Religious School. The mitzvah hours are designed to train students to be teaching and program assistants, young student mentors, and tutors.
